Unseen Analysis

This question will always compare 2 unseen music magazines, 1 of which will be MOJO.

Q5: How far is media language used differently in Extracts 1 and 2 to reflect genre conventions?[15]
In your answer you must:
Analyse examples of how media language is used similarly and differently in Extracts 1 and 2, which are from Q and MOJO magazines
  • women
  • colour scheme
  • feature more artists
  • loyal fans vs brands
  • advertisment
  • male gaze theory
Make judgements and reach conclusions about whether there are more similarities due to genre conventions than differences in the extracts.

Media language is used here to differ both magazine articles from each other. We see both women are portrayed slightly differently through the use of layouts, colour and main image.

In extract one, media language is seen through the main image in which Madonna is being sexualised through mise-en-scene. In the image Madonna is seen wearing heavy makeup such as thick eyeliner and lipstick this conforms to the male gaze theory as mojo's main target audience is men this will stereotypically attract them as Madonna looks "sexy". Similarly, in extract 2, Cheryl Cole is being sexualised too through the use of mise-en-scene as she is wearing heavy makeup as well such as red lipstick, the colour red has connotations of love and romance. In addition to this, she is seen licking her ring which suggests other activities which would typically be seen as sexy enhancing the attraction of the male gaze too.
Another way both extracts use media language to differ from one another is through the use

Exam Questions

1 marker- identify the regulator for radio in the uk?

Off-com

4 maker- explain two ways that a print magazine can gain revenue?

one way a print magazine can gain revenue is through promoting upcoming concerts as a way of inviting loyal fans to pay and go to concerts and as they were the generation after the war they had enough money to go and spend their money on activities they enjoy. Another way print magazines gain revenue is though advertisement for example an artist will pay the magazine e.g MOJO for their new album to be promoted in the magazine.

5 marker- how can magazines be aimed at a range of audiences e.g (MOJO is aimed at a range of audiences e.g more niche, older, predominately male audiences with an average age of 41)

Primary                         Secondary

G-male                          majority male

R-white                         mainly white

A- 35-50 (mature)                      15-34

C-middle class abc1      middle and working class

E- white                         mainly white

Niche- small select audience, mojo loyal music fans, rock

One way mojo magazine satisfies a range of audiences is through featuring gender equality through the promotion of abba which includes a balance of both male and female members through showing gender equality this not shows that women can achieve the same level of success than man and attract more women to read this magazine but also empowers women this also attracts the primary target audience of male as it conforms to the male gaze theory that men are more likely to read the magazine as they are stereotypically attracted to females.

Another way mojo magazine satisfies a range of audiences is through featuring a black male artist Cecil Taylor this allows readers of different ethnicities to feel included in the music industry and MOJO magazine as well as Cecil Taylor being male. This also conforms to the niche loyal fans that are predominately male as they will want to see new artists of different music genres to expands their interests.
